The real U.S.S. Brooke DEG-1 was the lead ship of the Brooke class and represented a major step forward in U.S. Navy escort design. Originally classified as a guided missile destroyer escort, Brooke was later redesignated FFG-1 guided missile frigate during the Navy’s 1975 ship reclassification. The Brooke class was based on the Garcia-class design but added the Tartar guided missile system, giving these ships important anti-aircraft capability in addition to their anti-submarine role.
Designed to protect amphibious forces, patrol coastal waters, and defend convoys from submarine threats, Brooke carried a powerful mix of weapons and sensors for her time. Her armament included a 5-inch gun, Tartar missile launcher, ASROC anti-submarine rocket launcher, torpedo tubes, sonar, radar systems, and helicopter capability. Later Brooke-class ships operated with the SH-2 Seasprite helicopter, expanding their anti-submarine warfare mission.
U.S.S. Brooke was built by Lockheed Shipbuilding & Construction in Seattle, Washington. She was laid down in 1962, launched in 1963, commissioned in 1966, and served until 1988. After U.S. Navy service, she was transferred to Pakistan and renamed Khaibar.
