HISTORY OF AMT SCALE MODEL KITS

West Gallogly Sr. founded Aluminum Model Toys (AMT) in 1948. Gallogly was a lawyer with solid connections to Ford Motor Company and created models as a side business. He used cast aluminum for his original models, inspiring the company's name.

Interestingly, AMT Manufacturing's original models were for dealership promotion rather than collecting or racing. Gallogly worked with Ford Motor Company, using official Ford paint to color his models. Ford dealerships used these replicas to show color variations for the cars they sold. Most models were a 1:25 scale of the actual vehicles.

By the 1950s, injection plastic molding became available, and AMT abandoned aluminum models for plastic models. Though only the original models used aluminum, the company name has remained the same.

As the company developed and promotional cars began to lose prominence in car dealerships, AMT adapted to making model cars for hobbyists.

AMT SPECIALTIES IN THE MODEL KIT INDUSTRY
