The origin of gasser racing is traced to the 1950s. Drastically jacked up front suspension using either a beam or tubular axle distributed the weight, giving the car better balance and acceleration. Gassers are usually built using closed-body models from the 1930s through the early 1960s. The Tri-Chevys from 1955 through 1957 were extremely popular. They had a rigid body, short wheelbase, and were easily customized. Stock engines were swapped for audacious horsepower, they were completely stripped of their comfort amenities, and their weight was reduced to the bare bones for one purpose....crossing the finish line before YOU.
